Arnold Palmer
Golf lost a legend last Sunday as Arnold Palmer passed away awaiting cardiac surgery. He died at the age of 87. “The King” will be extremely missed and most certainly remembered as one of the pioneers in the sport, changing it
from a country club sport to one for the people. He helped to advance the game of golf, "It is not an exaggeration to say there would be no modern day PGA Tour without Arnold Palmer," said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.
Palmer was part of the “Big Three,” including Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus. He won 62 titles on the PGA tour. Four of those victories were at the Masters, two at the British Open, and one at the US Open. He played on six Ryder Cup teams and was captain for two of them.
Palmer helped to design 225 courses throughout the world. Lifelong friend Jack Nicklaus said when he received the news of his death, “Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself.”
Arnold also created a great drink. It all started in a restaurant when someone asked for an “Arnold Palmer,” the drink that Arnold had requested but never called it that. They all turned to see that she wanted the iced tea and lemonade mix that he loved. He was actually embarrassed to call it that when he ordered it. So in remembrance of a great player of the sport, enjoy an Arnold Palmer.
