SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:
Julia Mayhew
I think that everyone at ILC has at least heard of Julia Mayhew. She’s one of the most enthusiastic, sarcastic, competitive people I know, and that’s saying something. She’s also very honest and empathetic. Hope you have fun reading this senior spotlight!
S: When and where?
I was born on October 25, 2005 in
Atlanta, Georgia

S: What’s your favorite grade
school memory?
Grade school stunk. Ummm…
Let’s come back to that…

S: Advice for the freshies?
Get involved in everything so you can
meet a lot of people, then decide what
you don’t want to do later on.

S: If you could summarize high school in one word what would it be?
(one word…) Fleeting. Because it goes by really fast, but it’s exciting. You learn a lot of things and meet a lot of people.

S: Favorite high school memory?
There are so many. Umm, Freshman year Vance, Ben and I took apart Daniel’s basketball pump, put Dr Pepper in it and went shooting people with it. That was fun. Sophomore year, wow, that feels so long ago… I gotta think. It’s kinda hard to be put on the spot.
I don’t really even remember anything from sophomore year. Maybe my favorite memory from junior year is the day of Banquet and I was so stressed out, and we had to get to the venue before anyone else. Ben and I decided to park in the dirt. Then later we’re eating dinner and it’s pouring rain and you can’t really hear anyone talking, but we got through it. We were the last ones to leave and when we got out to his car, he put it in drive and it wouldn’t go anywhere. He put it in reverse, and it wouldn’t go anywhere. Then I got out in my banquet dress and in heels, and I started pushing the car. My feet were sinking in the mud, but we got super lucky because a pickup truck came and asked if we needed help. The guy says he'll be right back, and he comes back five minutes later with these ratchet strap thingies and he hooks them up to the front of Ben's car. Then he started pulling us out of the mud with his pickup truck. On the way home my shoes are covered in mud; they're completely ruined. My dress is soaking wet, and Ben’s suit is soaking wet. Actually, Ben didn't even have any mud on him at all, so he got lucky. But then we got back and all of the parents at the after banquet party gave us extra tickets because we got stuck in the mud.
Oh, and I remember my favorite memory from sophomore year. It was actually at a soccer practice when Prof Sippert started chasing George around because George was being sassy. Sippert is yelling at him, and George is yelling back, and then all the guys started taking their shirts off even though Prof said no. He made them do five push-ups, but they didn't actually do the push-ups. Sippert was running around like a drill sergeant and it was just super funny.

S: Favorite play and musical, why?
My favorite play was definitely Father Knows Best, because it was so funny, and I enjoyed the cast, and the character I got was just my favorite character to act out. I also loved The Music Man because of all the choreography, even though I didn’t get to do any of it. I had a fun character, too, and that made a big difference.

S: Plans for after high school?
Umm, I’m going to be a functional nutritionist. And, I’m going to get my certification through the AFPA. Once I get my certification for that, I’ll get certified as a prenatal and postpartum fitness coach and work with pregnant ladies.

S: Favorite dorm memory?
My favorite memory in the dorm is from my freshman year. There were these suspicious pipes on my ceiling and they burst on me and all over my room. I had to sleep on the floor because there was this weird substance all over my room.

S: Pet Peeve?
Umm, oh, I have so many pet peeves, but I can’t think of a single one right now. I hate it when people wear sandals without socks.

S: What was your favorite year overall?
They’ve gotten better every year. I think Senior year will be my favorite.

S: What’s one thing people don’t really know about you?
Ummm, I’m not as dumb as people think. I’m really not; I promise.

S: What’s your favorite sport to play here, and what’s your favorite memory from that sport?
Basketball. Sophomore year when we won our first tournament game against Clayton and I really enjoyed playing with Riley and Charis that year. It was really exciting to be able to have another game with them.

S: Weirdest thing you’ve heard on campus?
I don’t know. Just walk around Vance and you’ll probably hear something weird.

A: If you had one final wish before you died, what would it be?
E: It would bring me Jesus, because I wouldn't want to be here anymore.

Senior Spotlight:
Micah Fossum
Perhaps you have seen a man zooming off of campus, sometimes sporting some FBI agent looking sunglasses while he runs. That man would be Micah Fossum. From crying while running up hills together, the many bus rides back from meets, and seeing terrifying large worms, I have gotten to know Micah pretty well, and our interactions usually end with us laughing about something really dumb. It has been my honor and privilege to see him grow from a young little seedy freshman into the senior he is today. If you haven’t gotten the chance to talk to him, make sure you do before the year is over; it’ll be worth your while.
A - Andrew
M - Micah
A: When? Where? Why?
M: May 7, 2006, the where was (takes very long time to ponder this), the Lexington Medical Center. Why? Because my parents wanted to.
A: What was your favorite high school memory?
M: I gotta think about that… (looks off into the distance for prolonged periods of time) ((at least two hours later)). Probably the track practices for Junior year. There was just something about those that was different about those.
A: Advice for the young lads and lasses?
M: The normal people thing, don’t be annoying and stupid. Get to know the people in your class, don’t just not talk to them.
A: If you could be a freshman knowing what you know now, would you do anything differently?
M: Can’t really think of anything, I would keep it how it is.
A: Why do you like running?
M: (gets a cheesy smile on his face) First of all, it can keep me in shape. It helps your mood, and keeps you happy. If you are depressed or anything it can help with that too (he claims he isn’t depressed, so that is good) It is also the main thing I’m good at, so I’ve just continued to do it throughout high school.
A: Do you take steroids for running?
M: No, I’m just better than you. (he’s lying, he definitely takes steroids on the regular)
A: What is your favorite run/race you have had?
M: Probably Junior Year at Durand, because it was the first time I finally broke the sub-18 barrier.
A: Desert Island. Three Things. Hit me with the sauce.
M: (again, deeply pondering the question) I gotta have running shoes, probably Hoka running shoes. Gotta have some goldfish, the Xtra Cheddar flavor blasted ones. (absolutely amazing choice here, big respect for that snack). And an inflatable raft for when I want to get off. I’ll just spend my days eating my goldfish.
A: What is [at least] one of your bucket list items?
M: Run a 100 mile race, and then sleep for a whole day after. Those always seemed really cool. Visit a country outside the US, maybe in Europe or something. Somewhere in Scandanavia.
A: Where do you see Micah in 10 years?
Daniel K: Still running his 100,000th mile.
Andrew L: In my basement
Chris K: Living alone with one of his dogs.
Blake Wales: Winning ultra marathons on 100 degree days. Still has perfect hair. Coaches XC for Immanuel and has two kids.
Derek Wales: Like Forrest Gump, smartest man in the world, billionaire, running to no end.

Kids Movies + Bracket
Everyone watches movies. There might be many genres that we like, animated or live action, romance or thrillers, but one group probably evokes some special nostalgia in your minds; the movies you watched when you were but a wee tater tot sitting on your couch at home or at a friends house. The movies we watched as kids tend to stick with us a little more, and perhaps bring us more joy when we watch them now, because of the good times they were associated with way back when. Personally, I love kids movies. I’m not hating on any other genres here, I’ll watch a wide variety of categories, but kids movies often do something for me that other movies sometimes cannot. Here’s an example. You get home from work or school, you’ve done all your work or whatever you needed to do for the day, and you’re gonna throw on a movie before you go to bed. Now you can look through whatever movies you want and try to pick one, but it can be hard to find one to fit your mood, or one that you know you will enjoy. If you are tired it can be hard to follow a complex plot line or appreciate all the things that other movies intended for older audiences have to offer. And that’s where the beauty of the kids movie lies; in its simplicity. They’re often simple stories, lighthearted humor, great soundtracks, and an ending that just makes you feel warm and fuzzy. They’re very consistent feel-good entertainment. But while reflecting on kids movies, I got to thinking... what is the absolute best of the best when it comes to these movies? The crème de la crème? In my quest to discover the answer to this essential and earth-shattering question, I designed a bracket to decide, once and for all, what is the greatest kids movie of all-time? It was a challenge to narrow it down to just 64 movies, as there are so many kids movies out there that are pretty high quality. After a painstaking cut process, I then seeded those 64 movies into 4 regions, March Madness style. All that’s left now is to determine a champion, and that’s where you come into play. I will be sending out a Google Form periodically as the tournament advances for you to vote on these matchups. The questions are not required on the Google Form, so if you only want to vote for a couple of your favorites or simply don’t know enough about the movies and which you want to pick, that’s quite alright. Access to a bracket will be available if you wish to see it in all its glory and splendor. So what’ll it be??? Toy Story? The Lion King? How to Train your Dragon? Your vote will decide! Brush up on your Disney and Pixar films, and prepare yourselves. The Ultimate Kids Movie Bracket is here.
Meet the RA's
Joel Bernthal
Hi, my name is Joel (you’ll never know my middle name) Bernthal and I’m from Winterhaven, FL. I am 19 years old and am in my second year of Pre-The. In high school I did multiple sports including cross country, basketball, track, baseball, and flag football but my favorite sport is volleyball. In my free time I enjoy volleyball, ultimate frisbee, and even biking. This year I am looking forward to playing as quarterback for this year's flag football team and overall just hanging out with friends and living in the dorm.
Lydia Ohlmann
Hi, my name is Lydia Ann Maria Ohlmann. I am currently in the teaching program here at Immanuel, working towards a career through that degree. I’m 18 and have been homeschooled my entire life in my hometown, St. Louis, Missouri. My favorite sport is soccer but I also played and enjoyed volleyball and basketball throughout middle school and high school. I am looking forward to living in such a lovely, God-centered environment this school year!
Austin Lien
Hi, my name is Austin Lien. I'm attending ILC for Pre-The currently, and after four years I’ll be in Sem. Growing up I've always been told that I’d be a good pastor, so around seventh or eighth grade I decided I was going to attend Immanuel for the seven years required. When it comes to sports I’d say my favorites would be soccer and basketball, playing eight years of both. Other than those things I’m a pretty boring person.

Why you Should Consider Joining XC
Cross country is a very mentally and physically challenging sport for sure but with the drive and motivation can become a very “rewarding” sport. At Immanuel the cross country team is coached by Steve Sydow and currently consists of a team of 15 total with 13 boys and 2 girls. People run cross country to get in shape, for the excitement of the meets, and even simply, just to run. It is one of the best sports to get you in shape and healthy. By getting “in shape” you are prepared ahead of time for upcoming sports such as flag football and basketball. Another perk is Steve Sydow’s fantastic chocolate chip muffins every Saturday morning after practice. Some of the more difficult things of cross country include hill training, longer distance runs, and even dealing with the weather. Even though it can be challenging and hard, in the end it is very “exhilarating” and leaves you feeling very accomplished.

Advice Column
In this column I will attempt to provide advice to those seeking it. Feel free to email questions to the Flash editor, Lydia Strike.
Question: I am a new student at Immanuel. It seems like many friendship groups have already been formed in past years. How do I go about making new friends with people I don’t know very well?
Advice: First of all, welcome to campus. I hope you find it as great of a place as I have. It is true that many friendships were developed between students in previous years, mainly through shared experiences. Since you have only been here a few weeks, be patient. You too will find that shared experiences will help you to connect with people, even if you don’t know them very well now. My advice would be to become active in activities that interest you, and be willing to try new activities that you may not have tried before.
In addition, be nice to everyone. You never know how many people may feel the same way you do. As my mother used to say, “If you want to have a friend, be a friend.” Sometimes it is as easy as that.
Finally, you might be surprised at how many times your friendships go through stages in your high school years. Sometimes friendships are strong and permanent, but other times they fade and new ones take their place. This may happen because our interests and priorities change throughout life. Be open to new friendships as well as old ones. One can never have too many friends.

The City of “Clear Water”
Before the early settlers came to what is now known as Eau Claire, there were many different Indian tribes that lived in the area such as the Chippewa and Santee Sioux tribes. At one point, the Chippewa drove the Santee Sioux tribe out all the way to the Chippewa River. There they made a treaty. If you go to Phoenix Park you can see the line that divided the Chippewa’s land from the Sioux's land. Also, the Chippewa called themselves the Anishinaabeg which means “True people,” but other Indians and Eropeans called them Ojibwe, or Chippewa, which meant “puckered up.”
Later immigrants from Germany and Scandinavia settled the valley. But the first settler of the valley was a French-Canadian named Charles Belille. Many of the first settlers to the Valley were French-Canadian.
Jonathen Carver wrote a description of the land that is now Eau Claire and many trappers came and lived in Eau Claire in 1784. In 1845, the first permanent settlers from Europe arrived in Eau Claire. In 1872, Eau Claire was incorporated as a city.
FUN FACT: In 1892, eight of the 64 millionaires in the United States lived in Eau Claire.

Leave it Better Projects
The school year is only a few weeks underway, but Leave it Better has already completed several projects around campus. Leave it Better is “a group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are dedicated to restoring and improving our campus” (Source: ilc.edu/activities/leave-it-better/).
You may have noticed in the first week of school the six wooden poles by North Hall. Hopefully by now you have also noticed the completed structure – a bike shelter. LiB put the posts in last year before school ended, but time ran out to put the roof on. The project was picked up right where it left off when the current year started and within two weeks it was completed.
While one part of the team worked on the bike shelter, others were hard at work digging holes behind Prof. Sippert’s house for the porch. The holes were dug four feet deep and sixteen inches around. A few days later the concrete was poured, each bag mixed with water and carefully inspected and approved by Prof. Roehl and Prof. Rodebaugh. The next step is building the deck portion of the porch.
Last Sunday LiB built a Gaga Ball pit behind the softball field. There was a good turnout of people and the task was completed in a little over 2 hours.
Completing a project is both beneficial to campus and rewarding. If you want to get involved, come to the next meeting. It’s never too late to join.

Blast from the Past:
Music + Study Hall = ???
Should you study while listening to music? With access to music anytime and anywhere as easy as it is today, we often have to ask ourselves this question. Many studies have been done on this topic and from what I have read, they all seem to come to the same conclusion. It depends. It depends on the person. It depends on the music. It depends on the topic of study.
Music has been proven to improve people's moods and productivity, which, obviously, can have huge benefits when it comes to studying and homework. While studying, you should not be too relaxed or too energized, and music is a quick and easy way to get yourself just where you need to be. Music is also a great way to block out distractions, until it becomes a distraction itself. I have often heard that you should not listen to music with lyrics while studying, but studies show that lyrics only have significant negative effects when reading or writing. Since math based studies don’t involve language, it’s generally okay to listen to mellow music with lyrics as long as you aren’t too easily distracted. Personally, I find it very difficult to study without music. I get easily distracted by things around me and music helps me to get in the mood to buckle down and finish an assignment. It is very important, however, that I’m listening to the right kind of music. If I have to write an essay (or a FLASH article) I usually go with movie scores, piano covers, or orchestral arrangements. (For all you band folks, the Air Force Academy has a spectacular rendition of Resplendent Glory on Spotify.) If I’m doing math, chemistry, or physics I often listen to mellow acoustic or acapella groups. (James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Hey Marcellus, Peter Hollens, and Pentatonix are some of my go to’s.) I’ve also found that listening to music in other languages works pretty well. (Juan Luis Guerra is all you really need, to be honest. Just stay away from Senor Wooly.) Again, it really comes down to personal preference. Some people can study with music, some can’t. It’s all about knowing what will distract or motivate you.
