Famous Last Words

Famous Last Words

As an outgoing senior here at Immanuel, many lasts are being observed and many more will be before graduation finally comes. This got me thinking about last words, as this will be my last (printed) words here at Immanuel. Here’s a sampling of people who used their (very) last words better than I could (in the Flash).

Blues singer Bessie Smith: “I’m going, but I’m going in the name of the Lord.” Well said, Bessie. I think we can all aspire to have this confidence on our deathbeds.

Harriet Tubman: “Swing low, sweet chariot.” She died singing the famous tune with her family.

On a more humorous note, murderer James W. Rodgers: “Bring me a bullet-proof vest.” He said this when asked if he had a last request before being put in front of a firing squad.

Murderers seem to provide good last quotes. This one from Thomas J. Grasso: “I did not get my Spaghetti-O’s; I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this.” He was complaining that he did not get the last meal he had requested.

Percy Grainger, Australian Composer: “You’re the only one I like.” He spoke these words to his wife Ella as he died.

John Wayne also died while melting hearts: “Of course I know who you are. You’re my girl. I love you.”

Comedian Groucho Marx, funny to the end: “This is no way to live!”

“Pistol” Pete Maravich, NBA basketball player: “I feel great.” He collapsed during a pickup game and died.

Sir Winston Churchill: “I’m bored with it all.”

My personal favorite, “Stonewall” Jackson: “Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.” He, too, had a confidence that we all hope to have at our deaths.

I hope you have enjoyed these words, as well as the thousands I have written in the Flash, as much as I have. I don’t think my own words could close this appropriately, so I’ll let someone else take it away. I think you’ll enjoy them; perfect words. Jesus was better at talking than I am.

“Do you now believe? Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” -John 16:31-33
