It's No Accident

There are probably few things in life which bring our own mortality into focus more than a car accident. One moment the world appears one way and the next it appears much differently, if at all. Recently, several students of Immanuel were involved in car accidents that had the potential of causing great bodily harm or even death. The people involved are close to me. If you have never experienced “that phone call” yet in life, chances are you will. “There has been an accident…” One’s heart skips a beat. This is because we know that the next few words spoken could significantly alter our life and the lives of those we love. The first thing on our minds is the question, “Is everybody ok?”

I think people use the term “accident” to convey that this thing that happened was not done intentionally, or on purpose. It may have even happened in spite of one’s best intentions to have it not happen. But we also know that nothing really happens by accident. We can take comfort in the fact that nothing takes place without the knowledge and permission of our loving God. “For we know that all things… You know the rest.

In His mercy God saw fit to spare the lives of my family and friends in their recent accidents. For this I am thankful. May He grant you all safe travels home this Christmas break and safe returns back to school. But more importantly, may He grant you the assurance of His loving care for you, demonstrated in the birth of our Savior from sin. That too was no accident.

Merry Christmas!
